Cardio Workout Question

I would like to know if you can get a cardio workout with a walking program. There seems to be a bit of a debate on this with someone who believes if you aren't running, you aren't getting a cardio workout?

Well, generally a cardio workout means that the heart, lungs etc...get a good workout right? So, I reckon brisk walking would qualify...so long as you keep it at a good pace and maybe work up a light sweat?

I got this link from the athlete Lance Armstrong's foundation website

http://www.livestrong.com/article/308153-is-walking-cardio-exercise/

There are many benefits to walking...and the more, the faster --> the better!

I think anything that elevates your heart rate is the definition of a cardio workout. Some cardio workouts do more for the body than others but walking would bec onsidered cardio.

Walking wouldn't really be cardio unless you're walking on an incline, with added weight, and/or briskly. Your heart rate needs to be higher than 120 to be considered cardio.

If you are walking fast you can get a great cardio workout from it. Or pumping your arms fast. I have a walking DVD I do and it does make your heart pump fast so yes it is cardio.

It shouldnot be just a simple or normal walking, it should be intense or brisk walking.
Also if you will walk in an inclined plane (uphill) where you will exert more effort, you can feel that you are really doing a workout and will sweat a lot.

A stroll in the park will not give you a cardio workout, but if you step it out, and swing your arms as you walk, you'll get everything pumping and have a real cardio workout. It's not about the activity - it's about the amount of effort you put into it, so give it all you've got get yourself slightly out of breath.
