The best anti-virus is kaspersky or norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn't remove what it finds. Second best free are avast and avg and others. The microsoft firewall that comes free with xp and vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free zone alarm. Zone alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in firefox 3 and ie 7 and ie 8 (smart screen filter) and avg. It's strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It's tough to say which is best.
Just personal opinion of course. I use avast , i have also got superantispyware and malwarebytes. I recently changed to comodo firewall which seems fine and i seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and i have had no trouble with viruses trojans hackers etc. I also use windows defender from the microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one a/v as it can cause conflicts. You should run a/v and anti spy weekly. You will have to find the appropriate links as i am now getting violations each time i post a link. Seems like i have a troll.

According to me, thes best free anti virus is the new one out by microsoft called microsoft security essentials. It is free, light, strong (i'm stressing on it, it detects all the viruses! ) and easy to use. The only requirements are you should have a windows xp, windows vista or windows 7 based computer (genuine os! ) and you can run it. I've started using it as my antivirus after my eset smart security license ended. And personally, it runs better dan eset in windows 7. If you want a free one, i recommend you microsoft security essentials. Also, it has a benefit of being made by microsoft, so it'll be fully integrated with windows, making it the best. Not only among the free ones, i consider it the best even among the paid ones. You can know more about it and download it from here-
Avira or microsoft security essentials are also two free programs lighter on systems resources but if you haven't completely removed any previous security program you may experience a loss in system performance. Try the avast uninstall utility before installing a new security program. If you also had any other security programs search for removal tools for them as well. This should clean up any left over junk from old programs. Good luck.
i use linux/bsd
if i had a virus in the past five years, i didn't, and that is the reason. There is no best program, there are good practices and good administrating, there are good practices and there are good programs, none are best, i prefer to use clamav and rkhunter, i prefer to use bsd and gnu/linux. Look at windows secrets (dot) com. Old hacker named fred langa knows many many things about the windows kernel.
Bit defedner, that is what i found after surfing several hours on the internet. I tried it by myself and you know what, that is awesome, you can download it for free from here:
