Canada doesn't have a President but they do have a Prime Minister. Currently, the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada is 50-year old Stephen Harper of the Conservative Party. He was appointed to the position on February 6, 2006 following an election held earlier in the year and still holds office.
The Prime Minister, just like other ministers in the Cabinet, is appointed to the position by the Governor General who acts on behalf of the Queen of England. In addition to being the Prime Minister, Harper received the title The Right Honourable and is allowed to keep the title for life as has been the case with all past Prime Ministers.
Harper was born in Toronto and was the first of three sons to Margaret and Joseph Harper. Harper has a Bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Calgary He would return to his alma mater to work on and earn a Master's degree in economics in 1993.
In 1993, Harper married Laureen Teskey and they have two children: Benjamin born in 1996 and Rachel who was born in 1999. The Prime Minister is also a big hockey fan cheering for his childhood team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Harper is currently working on a book about the history of hockey and occasionally writes articles about his favorite sport.
